SUDI Prevention Training
Build your knowledge, confidence, and capability across the SUDI Prevention Learning Pathway
Hāpai Te Hauora has developed a suite of SUDI prevention training programmes to support health professionals, midwives, Plunket/Tamariki Ora nurses, community health workers, support services, educators, and others working with whānau and pēpi across Aotearoa.
Designed using current evidence, sector expertise, and the experiences and insights of whānau, the training supports a consistent, evidence-informed approach to safe sleep and SUDI prevention.
Whether you are looking to build your own knowledge, strengthen your confidence in supporting whānau, or become a trainer delivering education to others, the SUDI Prevention Learning Pathway provides flexible learning opportunities to suit your role.
The SUDI Prevention Learning Pathway
Online Training
The Online Training is the recommended starting point for all participants. Through six self-paced online modules, each taking approximately 10–15 minutes, participants build foundational knowledge of SUDI prevention, including key risk and protective factors, evidence-informed safe sleep guidance, the Foundations for Safe Sleep, culturally responsive approaches, and effective engagement with whānau. The programme includes a focus on working with Māori and Pacific whānau, who continue to experience higher rates of SUDI in Aotearoa.
Each module includes video-based learning and a short knowledge check. Participants who complete all six modules receive a certificate of completion.
Practical Face-to-Face Workshop
Building on the Online Training, this one-day workshop is designed for those wanting to apply their learning and build confidence in SUDI prevention practice.
Through interactive activities, facilitated discussion, and real-life scenarios, participants build confidence in having safe sleep conversations with whānau, applying the Foundations for Safe Sleep messages, and responding to common questions and situations they may encounter in their role.
Train-the-Trainer Programme
The Train-the-Trainer Programme is designed for those who will be delivering SUDI prevention education within their organisation, community, or sector. Through this one-day face-to-face workshop, participants develop the knowledge, facilitation skills, and resources to deliver consistent, evidence-informed SUDI prevention education aligned with the national Foundations for Safe Sleep approach.
Participants are expected to have completed both the Online Training and Practical Face-to-Face Workshop before registering their interest. Hāpai Te Hauora will then discuss the programme with prospective participants to ensure it is the right fit for their role and opportunities to deliver training.
Workshops are scheduled based on participant demand and trainer availability.
